After chin implant surgery, pain medications are provided to relieve any soreness and swelling, and the chin is taped to prevent the implant from shifting as a result of post-surgical swelling in the jaw region (elevating the head also helps minimize swelling). Patients should arrange for someone to drive them home after the procedure; however, most individuals are able to resume light activities after the anesthesia wears off. It is common for chin implant patients to experience the minor side effect of temporary numbness in the lower lip region, which is similar to what one might experience after receiving novocaine at a dentist appointment. Patients whose incisions were closed with dissolvable stitches placed inside of the mouth (as with biocompatible implants) will be restricted to a soft or liquid diet for a few days after surgery. The dissolvable stitches utilized for biocompatible implants will naturally dissolve within several weeks. Patients whose chin augmentation involved a silicone implant (incision under the chin) will return to Dr. V's office in approximately one week in order to have the stitches removed.
