Cheek Augmentation

With their unique structure, fullness, and symmetry, cheeks play a surprisingly important role in each person's individual appearance and natural beauty. Our cheeks determine the shape of our face, define the width of our smile, and even affect the appearance of our eyes. Thus, subtle changes to the shape of the cheeks through cheek augmentation surgery will have a dramatic impact on our overall appearance.

Cheek augmentation or enhancement can give the face a more defined, prominent, or contoured shape. It can correct natural asymmetries to provide a more pleasing aesthetic balance. And finally, cheek augmentation can reverse the effects of time and gravity that pull the cheeks downward and create hollowed, tired eyes and deep furrows around the mouth, thus restoring the face's youthful fullness and giving the face a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance.

Any cheek augmentation must be performed by an experienced facial plastic surgeon like Dr. V with an eye for detail and an understanding of how the intricate, delicate structures of the face work together to create each individual's unique beauty. Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen is double Board Certified and has built a lasting reputation as one North Virginia's experts in cheek enhancements.

    How We Perform Cheek Augmentations

There are two main options for cheek enhancement: natural fat transfer and biocompatible implants. Dr. V will examine your face and recommend an option based on your existing facial shape and your aesthetic goals.

    Cheek Implants

Cheek implants use biocompatible material to augment existing structures of the cheek, increase the projection of the cheek bones, and add volume to flat or recessed areas. Cheek implants have been used for over fifty years and have a proven safety record. The implants are generally silicone, and can either graft permanently onto existing facial structures or be designed for removal at a later date. Implants are ideal for individuals seeking to make a dramatic change to their facial structure. There are three general shapes from which to choose. Malar implants are grafted directly onto the cheekbone and provide a very high, prominent, sculpted profile. Submalar implants are placed underneath the bone, thus providing a fuller, more rounded appearance to the mid-face. Finally, combined implants augment both the cheekbone and the cheek for a very prominent, full appearance.

    Fat Transfer

This option is ideal for individuals who are seeking a more subtle, permanent change in the structure and appearance of their cheeks. This method uses fat from another area of the body, usually the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks, to augment the natural contours of the cheeks and provide additional fullness and volume to the face. It is minimally-invasive, safe, and effective, and does not require major downtime. It is also ideal for individuals who are interested in other liposuction procedures. During the procedure, the surgeon will use a small, sterile cannula to remove fat from the donor site. The fat is then cleansed in a centrifuge and delivered to the cheeks using a state-of-the-art micro-syringe. The fat is transferred in extremely small quantities, increasing the likelihood that the donor fat will become a permanent part of the existing facial tissue and ensuring smooth, natural-looking results.
